Hornets Shutout Marlins In 2-0 Victory

Virginia Beach, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's soccer squad netted a goal in each half to secure a 2-0 victory against Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday night at Foster Field.

The Hornets (5-4-2, 2-0-1) get their second ODAC shutout in the triumph over the Marlins. Lynchburg went in front in the 20th minute after junior Madelyn Boyce made a run past her defender and struck it by the keeper into the bottom left corner. The Mount Airy, Md. native netted her fifth score of the season and leads the Hornets in goals scored this season. Neither side was able to convert for the rest of the first half despite Virginia Wesleyan firing off seven first-half shots and Lynchburg striking four in the beginning 45 minutes.

The Marlins let off five shots in the second half comeback effort while the Hornets sent six shots on the attack. Although the home squad fought hard to equalize, Lynchburg extended its advantage with under four minutes to go after senior Lelianis Irigoyen led a counterattack and booted a ball from 25 yards out above the keepers head and laid it into the back of the net. The sensational strike put the Hornets ahead by two and seal the visiting Lynchburg squad's victory.

Irigoyen has been key in the Hornets' offensive production in all of their ODAC contests this season, netting a goal in two of the competitions and an assist in the other. Lynchburg currently sits at fourth in the conference table and owns a 6-1 advantage on goals in ODAC outings. In tonight's game, senior Ella Tampio-Iorns knocked on the door numerous times with four shots. Senior defenders Elora Grochowski, Haleigh Casey, and freshman Sammie Rogstad played all 90 minutes and led the backline to its fifth shutout victory of the season.

The women's soccer squad has conference matches the rest of the way. Next up is a competition at neighboring rival Randolph on Saturday, October 12 at 2 p.m. Following that, the Hornets will return home for two matches during homecoming week.
