Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer squad is geared up for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference postseason, starting with a quarterfinal matchup against Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, November 2 at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 24 Hornets earned the top seed in the ODAC with a total of 23 conference points after finishing the season with a conference record of 7-1-2. Lynchburg brings a tenacious defensive unit into the playoffs as the squad held opponents to just nine goals in 16 games for a rate of .56 goals allowed per game. The Hornets and junior goalkeeper
Thomas Viscuso average a shutout every other game, which leads the ODAC.Â
Lynchburg takes to the pitch against EMU for the second time this season. Last time the two sides met on October 12, the contest ended in a scoreless draw. The Hornets fired off 29 shots in the outing while holding the Royals without a shot through 90 minutes.
These two programs met in the ODAC quarterfinals in 2017, which resulted in a 2-0 victory for Lynchburg. Jack Ashby and Fredy Flores each netted second-half scores on passes from Zach Thomas to earn the win. That season, the Hornets went on to defeat Washington and Lee in the ODAC finals and advanced to the NCAA DIII tournament second round. Overall, Lynchburg owns a 19-1-3 record against Eastern Mennonite since 1999. The Hornets have won the last nine of ten affairs against the Royals.
If the Hornets stand victorious on Saturday, they advance to the semifinal round and will face the winner of 4-seed Hampden-Sydney and 5-seed Roanoke. The match is set to be played on Wednesday, November 6. Start time for the game will be determined at a later date.
