Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse senior Jake Rust scored six goals in an 18-5 victory over Cabrini on Saturday.
It was Rust's second career six-goal game, and he is at 98 goals in total for his career. He netted all six of his goals Saturday before the fourth quarter, had three in the second, and scored once on a man-up opportunity. The Hornets were 3-11 on the man-up but two came back-to-back from Rust and Finn Schmidt during an eight-goal run for the Hornets. Beginning with Rust's second score of the day early in the second, the Hornets rattled off eight goals before Cabrini could answer back. Five of the goals on the run were courtesy of Rust, two were from Schmidt, and Ian McCarthy contributed the other.
Riley Hastings led the team with four assists, and Kolbe Haug added two helpers and a goal of his own. Dylan Wolfe pitched in a four-point day with a hat trick and an assist as well.
10 Hornets caused at least one turnover, and Lynchburg held Cabrini to only five goals. It was the least amount of goals Cabrini has scored in a game against Lynchburg since only mustering up four in 2011. Tyler Hadley and Henri Marindin each caused two turnovers, Darren Palma led the way with six ground balls, and Michael Kraus and Riley Frankel each won five faceoffs. Jack Ponzoni went 1-2 at the X as well.
Hadley earned his first win of the year in goal after making 11 saves: good for 69% of the Cavalier shots he faced. Andrew Miller, Chase Welsey, and Eric Allen all made saves in their six-plus minutes combined in goal.
Lynchburg (1-1) travels to Salisbury, Md. on Saturday, March 2 for a matchup with the defending national champions, the Salisbury Sea Gulls, at 1 p.m.
