Lynchburg, Va. -Â After a nine-month hiatus, the University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team returns to the floor this weekend. This year's squad kicks off their fall campaign in Danville, Va. at the Cougar Classic, hosted by Averett University.
The team will begin the weekend tournament Friday at noon, playing against Meredith. Historically, the Hornets have controlled the match series between the two, winning 11 of their 13 total matches. However, in their most recent matchup in Aug. 2019, Meredith claimed the victory and snapped an eight-game win streak for the Hornets.Â
Shortly after, at 2 pm on Friday, Lynchburg will finish their day one slate with a matchup against Salem.Â
The following day, the Hornets will square off against Bob Jones at 10 am. This will be the first meeting between the two schools in program history. Lynchburg will look to claim an impressive win early in the season here, as Bob Jones comes off a remarkable 2023 season which included a JUCO National Championship.Â
"That [matchup] will prepare us for the harder teams, like Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan", said sophomore middle blocker Ava Meinhardt. "It's an example of a really good game that is going to put us together and show what we can do against those tougher teams."Â
Finally, the Hornets will wrap up the Cougar Classic at 2 pm with a matchup against Methodist.Â
This weekend will also be the premiere of new head coach Kevin Cardoza's fall campaign. The former Virginia Tech assistant coach looks to establish a new culture for this group both on and off the court, with a great opportunity ahead this weekend.
