Box Score Lynchburg, Va. - The Lynchburg women's volleyball team opened up their home schedule with a match vs. Randolph-Macon (5-2) in front of a Code Red crowd. In a back-and-forth affair, Lynchburg fell in five sets, 3-2.
Before the ball was in the air, the Red Sea of Hornet fans made their presence known. In the first set, Lynchburg jumped out in front early, holding onto a 20-13 advantage. But the Yellow Jackets would eventually find their footing, and mount an impressive run of their own, going on a 10-3 run. Randolph-Macon went on to claim the first frame 27-25.
In the second set, the Yellow Jackets continued their run of momentum, starting off the frame with a 20-10 lead. While the Hornets would go on to fall 25-18, a late burst in the set sparked a fire under Lynchburg.Â
In the third, the Hornet offense started to roll. Kailey Keough, Bree Spainhour, and Tori Williamson began to punish the Yellow Jacket defense. The three Hornets would ultimately tally a combined total of 34 kills, all with 10 or more respectively. Lynchburg would win the third set 25-22
After taking their first set of the night, the Hornets showed no signs of letting up in the fourth. Libero, Abbey Barlow, showcased phenomenal defense, who tallied a total of 22 digs and seemed to be all over the floor. The relentless Hornet defense and spectacular distribution from Jaina Leek, with 37 assists, catapulted Lynchburg to a 25-16 victory.Â
Tied at two sets a piece, the Lynchburg crowd roared going into the final set. The two teams continued to trade punches in the final frame, finding themselves tied 12-12. The Yellow Jackets would take the concluding three points of the set and win 15-12.Â
While the Hornets now find themselves on a three-game skid, all losses to strong opponents, it's clear this year's group has begun to find their rhythm and chemistry on the floor.Â
This weekend, the Hornets will host the Hill City Classic, including North Carolina Wesleyan, LaGrange, Greensboro, and William Peace. Lynchburg will face Greensboro and William Peace on Friday and North Carolina Wesleyan and LaGrange on Saturday.Â
