Women's Soccer Aims to End Three-Game Skid at Guilford

Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team visits Guilford on Wednesday, Oct. 22 in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Appenzeller Field in Greensboro, N.C., hoping to end a three-match losing streak.

Currently occupying seventh in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings and an 8-4-2 overall record, Lynchburg's schedule features three more ODAC games to complete the regular season; Bridgewater and Hollins will round out the conference slate following the team's match against Guilford.

The Hornets dominate the all-time series with 30 wins to just one defeat. Lynchburg's lone loss arrived in the 2006 season when the team lost 1-0 on the road, but ever since, the Hornets have rattled off 20-straight victories.

Last season, Lynchburg toppled Guilford 3-0 on Shellenberger Field with goals from Madelyn Boyce, Meghan Lauder and Leilianis Irigoyen. The Hornets outshot their opponents 16-6, while Meredith Bowers and Kate Shepherd combined between the pipes to register the clean sheet.

On Saturday, the Hornets' 1-0 defeat against No. 9 Washington & Lee represents the second-straight match in which Lynchburg failed to net a goal, though Lynchburg relished several fruitful chances from the match's second half.

After being outshot 9-2 in the first half, the Hornets evened the disparity to 6-5 and led the possession stat by the end of the game.

Lynchburg's three previous opponents, each delivering defeats by a one-goal margin, include Randolph-Macon, Shenandoah and aforementioned No. 9 Washington & Lee. Each of the three opponents hold a top-four position in the ODAC standings.

Guilford enters Wednesday with an 8-5-2 record, led by former Hornet Ainsley Yates' four goals and seven assists. Yates leads the club with 15 points, and six Quakers sport four goals on the season.

The Quakers hold a 2-5 ODAC record, and each of their five conference losses is a shutout.

On Saturday, Oct. 18, Guilford fell 1-0 against Virginia Wesleyan on Senior Day at Appenzeller Field after conceding an 80th-minute goal to Alaina Alston. Despite battling toe-to-toe with the third-ranked team in the conference, goalkeeper Madison Motto collided with a defender upon fielding a crossed ball in the final minutes, and it squeaked free to find Alston.

Guilford only lost four players from last season, including graduate student goalkeeper Ady Franken. The Quakers sit in 10th in the ODAC standings and need a win to tie eighth-place Randolph for a chance at qualifying for the postseason.

For Lynchburg, Morgan Oliver owns the team lead with eight goals and five assists, while goalkeeper Kate Shepherd boasts five shutouts on the season.

Saturday's match is one of the two final road games of the regular season. The Hornets travel to Roanoke, Va. for the season finale on Thursday, Oct. 30 to face Hollins in the team's last ODAC contest.

Wednesday's match will be broadcast on FloSports.
