Greensboro, N.C. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team captured a 2-0 victory on the road at Guilford on Wednesday night, with first-half goals from Makayla Hargrove and Grace Gaskins to seal the three points.
The Hornets enjoyed a 19-9 shots advantage and forced six saves by Guilford keeper Madison Motto. Both goals were scored by a first-year Hornet, and the scores snapped a 253-minute scoreless spell for Lynchburg.
Lynchburg's offense fired early with the Hornets taking the lead in the 19th minute. Sammie Rogstad ushered a corner kick into the center of the box, and while Madelyn Boyce's header clipped the crossbar, Hargrove converted the rebound to earn the lead.
The goal marked Hargrove's third game-winning goal of the season, which leads the team.
While the Hornets outshot the Quakers 9-1 to begin the match, it was not until the 43rd minute that Lynchburg extended its advantage.
Substitute Grace Gaskins lingered outside the 18-yard box following a free kick by Lune DenHartog at midfield. When the ball took a towering bounce in front of Gaskins, the midfielder directed her bouncing shot beyond the keeper's reach to add insurance on the scoreboard.
While neither team wrinkled the scoreline in the second half, Lynchburg defended well to prevent Guilford's six opportunities from finding the net. Kate Shepherd added a pair of second-half saves to extend her total to four, and the Hornets registered their ninth clean sheet of the year.
Lynchburg improves its record to 9-4-2 while occupying seventh place in the ODAC standings, with a conference mark of 4-3-1. The team has scored before its opponent in each of the nine victories.
The Hornets return to action against Bridgewater on Saturday, Oct. 25 as the team celebrates Senior Day at Shellenberger Field.
