Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team will celebrate Senior Day at Shellenberger Field against Bridgewater on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hornets' penultimate Old Dominion Athletic Conference match.
The Hornets will celebrate five seniors during the festivities: Kate Shepherd, Zoe Villarreal, Maddi Olsen, Madelyn Boyce and Devon Rountree. The senior class clinched an ODAC title during its first season with an ODAC Championship win over Virginia Wesleyan.
Both teams enjoyed victories on Wednesday; Lynchburg defeated Guilford 2-0 on the road, while Bridgewater toppled Gettysburg 3-0 in a nonconference affair in Gettysburg, Pa.Â
The Eagles dominated their previous four opponents with a 29-0 goal disparity, and the team's four-match win streak is tied for their longest of the season. Bridgewater occupies fifth place in the ODAC standings with 15 points, while Lynchburg remains in seventh with 13 points.
The Hornets can guarantee a spot in the top eight with a victory in either of their final ODAC matches. Additionally, a win will elevate the team's win total to 10, as the overall record sits at 9-4-2. Since the turn of the century, the COVID-shortened 2020 season marked the only campaign during which the Hornets did not reach 10 or more victories.
Dating back to 1999, the Hornets own a 23-4-3 advantage over the Eagles, including a 17-match win streak from 1999 to 2015. In the teams' previous meeting, Lynchburg earned a 1-0 victory in the 2024 ODAC Quarterfinals at Shellenberger Field, led by Leileanis Irigoyen's third-minute goal.
Lynchburg received contributions from its first-year athletes in the team's victory at Guilford. McKayla Hargrove and Grace Gaskins netted first-half goals, while the Hornets surged to a 19-9 shot advantage.
Kate Shepherd played all 90 minutes to post her sixth clean sheet of the season, improving the team total to nine. The Hornets have not allowed a goal in seven of their wins in 2025.
On the other side, Bridgewater returned three All-ODAC selections from last season, including first-team selection Lyric Birkley. The senior leads Bridgewater with 31 points and 11 assists, while junior forward Laura Narby leads the club with 12 goals.
Despite boasting a nearly unblemished 7-1 home record, Bridgewater holds a 4-3 away record and has not earned a win at Shellenberger Field since 2021.
