No. 23 Men's Soccer Takes Top Spot In ODAC Standings With Win At WLU

Box Score Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team picked up a crucial conference victory Saturday evening, earning a 2-0 win over Washington and Lee on the road at Watt Field to claim sole position of the number one spot in the conference standings.

The No. 23 Hornets (13-1-2, 7-1-0) beat the Generals (8-3-5, 6-1-1) to the punch with the first strike of the game, scoring late in the opening half as Sean DeLorenzo found the back of the net in the 38th minute. The goal came off a ball from Kohlby Wilson, who entered as a substitute and made an impact to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

The Hornets doubled their advantage midway through the second half when Fischer Daniel capitalized in the 75th minute, extending Lynchburg's lead to two. The goal provided a comfortable cushion that the defense protected for the remainder of the match. William Casey led the Hornets with three shots, while Bruno Rihl Silva, DeLorenzo, Daniel, and Carlos Andres Romero each added efforts on target.

Lynchburg held onto its edge throughout the entire contest, fending off numerous dangerous attacking attempts from WLU. Lynchburg's back line and goalkeeper Thomas Viscuso anchored a strong defensive performance, turning away all five shots on goal from the Generals to secure the team's 10th shutout of the season.

Both sides created chances throughout, finishing even in total shots at 10 apiece. The Hornets earned four corner kicks to Washington and Lee's seven, but made the most of their opportunities in the attacking third.

The victory allowed Lynchburg to overtake the Generals for the top placement in the conference table. With 21 table points, the Hornets need to triumph or tie in their final regular season match against Shenandoah on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. to have the privilege of the number one seed and hosting throughout the ODAC postseason.
