Danville, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team exploded for nine goals in an assertive 9-0 road victory over ODAC foe Averett on Saturday afternoon at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
The win pushed the Hornets to four straight wins with an 8-1-1 overall and 3-0 in ODAC play, while the Cougars fell to 1-7-1 and 0-3 in conference action. Lynchburg wasted no time taking control as
Makayla Hargrove found the back of the net in the seventh minute to open the scoring. Just six minutes later,
Morgan Oliver doubled the lead off an assist from
Ava Olson, and
Teigan Casey added another in the 33rd minute to send the Hornets into halftime up 3-0.
The offense only grew stronger after the break as
Lauren Orner scored less than a minute into the second half from an Oliver assist, beginning a stretch of six Lynchburg goals in the period.
Rylee Wampler and
Samantha Mitchell each scored within seconds of one another in the 57th minute, both set up by Oliver, who later netted her second goal of the day in the 69th minute. A team goal in the 75th minute and a late strike from
Grace Gaskins, assisted by
Emilia Burns, sealed the commanding win.
Oliver led the Hornets' attack with two goals and three assists, while nine different players recorded either a goal or an assist in the balanced performance. Lynchburg outshot Averett 41-0 and held a 14-0 edge in corner kicks. In goal,
Kate Shepherd,
Kylie Cass, and
Alessandra Socio combined for the shutout, as the defense prevented Averett from registering a single shot.
The Hornets will look to continue their strong form when they return home for their next ODAC matchup against Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
