Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team is set for its final nonconference contest of the regular season, a bout against Messiah on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va. at the Horizons Edge Sports Campus.
The Hornets (8-0-2) remain undefeated through 10 games this season and ride a seven-game winning streak into the midweek matchup against the Falcons (3-6-2). Last time out, Lynchburg took down Averett at home in a 9-0 route, where
Sean DeLorenzo notched his first career hat trick while
Chris Wiley and
Izaack Cruz netted braces. Messiah is coming off a scoreless draw at home against Widener, its first conference competition of the season.
In the last 25 years, the Hornets and Falcons have matched up just twice. Messiah owns a slight edge in the series record with one win and one draw. That draw came on Sept. 3, 2016 with a 0-0 finish.Â
Lynchburg comes into tomorrow's affair boasting the seventh-best scoring offense across all of DIII, averaging 3.40 goals per game. Additionally, the Hornets are stout on the defensive side with just .500 goals per game, which ranks 16th in the nation. Offensively, it has been a collective effort thus far as seven different performers have three-or-more goals on the season and 20 different student-athletes have contributed points.
Messiah is paced offensively by Patrick Lee, a senior forward with five goals and three assists through 11 games. Fellow senior Davis Pagett is close behind with four goals and two assists. As a group, the Falcons average 1.45 goals per game and allow an average of 1.82 goals to opponents per outing. Messiah likes to push the ball downfield and apply pressure, resulting in the team accruing 8.0 corner kicks per game, the third-highest rate in the country.
Following tomorrow's match, the Hornets have ODAC play the rest of the way. Lynchburg will gear up for a bout at home against RV Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
