No. 17 Hornets Surge To 5-1 Victory Over Messiah

Harrisonburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team used a barrage of five consecutive goals, including three in the second half, and improved its win streak to eight straight with an assertive 5-1 win over Messiah on Wednesday night at the Horizons Edge Sports Campus.

After conceding an early goal in the sixth minute to Patrick Lee of Messiah (3-7-2), the No. 17 Hornets (9-0-2) quickly regained control and never looked back. Senior defender Benjamin Velasquez leveled the match in the 40th minute, converting from the penalty spot to make it one apiece. Just three minutes later, Saul Lopez Coreas put the Hornets ahead, finishing a dish from Fischer Daniel and giving Lynchburg a 2-1 lead going into the halftime intermission.

The Hornets wasted no time extending their advantage after the break. Evan Pask netted less than two minutes into the second half, then turned provider in the 56th minute by assisting Chris Wiley for Lynchburg's fourth goal. The Hornets capped the scoring in the 67th minute when Sean DeLorenzo found the back of the net off a pair of assists from Daniel and Lopez Coreas.

Lynchburg's attack generated 16 shots, 11 of which came after halftime, while holding Messiah to just one attempt in the second period. The Hornets' defense, anchored by Thomas Viscuso and Matthew Kopsidas in goal, conceded only once and combined for two saves.

Five different Hornets scored in the victory, and four provided assists, underscoring the team's balanced offensive effort, which has been consistent throughout the season. With the win, Lynchburg remains unbeaten through 11 games this season, the longest undefeated streak to open the season since 2022 where the Hornets did not drop their first 14 contests.

Lynchburg returns to the pitch this Saturday to take on ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan, a team that received votes in the most recent USC national coaches poll. The Hornets face the Marlins on Shellenberger Field at 7 p.m. on Oct. 11.
