Lynchburg Nipped By Dickinson In NCAA Third Round

Lynchburg, Va. -- In a back-and-forth battle of attrition that involved two elite teams, the University of Lynchburg men's soccer team was bested by Dickinson, 1-0, in the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament on Saturday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.

Although the Hornets had their season come to a close, this group cleared numerous program records throughout its campaign. The most notable record that this team smashed was the all-time goal scoring record, totaling 66 and beating out the previous record of 57 set in 2009. Additionally, the squad totaled 177 points on 66 goals and 45 assists, demolishing the previous program record of 153 set in 1997.

19 total wins ranks second among program-best seasons, trailing just the national runner-up 2010 squad by one victory. On the defensive side, this team notched 13 total shutouts, which is the second-most in school history and one more than last year's shutout total. The 12 total goals allowed this season tied for the third-best mark in Lynchburg history.

In today's contest, the lone goal that was scored came off the first corner of the game. Jeremy Sallade sent it in from the corner. Lynchburg keeper Thomas Viscuso highpointed to grab the ball but could not get a clean handle on it. The rock fell to the feet of Timi Omoniwa, who settled it to Saul Iwowo, who punched it into the bottom left corner.

The matchup was a defensive battle through-and-through with just three total strikes on goal and 17 shots between the two sides. Lynchburg was held to a season-low one shot on goal and tied for the least total shots in a match this season. The Hornets responded with stout defense as well, allowing just eight total shots and two shots on frame. Both squads proved their impressive defensive skill in the affair, but it was Dickinson who pushed one into the back of the net to triumph. Although Lynchburg's season has come to a close, there is much to be proud of from this resilient, record-breaking team.
