Fayetteville, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball squad bounced back with a midweek victory over Methodist, 15-4, on Wednesday evening at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
The No. 4 Hornets (13-2) finished their second game in as many days with a commanding 11-run triumph. Lynchburg capitalized right out of the gates, taking an early lead in the first inning. After back-to-back walks for
Joe Munitz and
Benton Jones,
Sean Pokorak doubled to center field, bringing in Munitz.
The third inning saw another sting from the Hornets as Jones launched a two-run homer down the right-field line, scoring Munitz. The offense continued to roll in the third with additional RBI contributions from
Gavin Collins and
Parker Cato, pushing Lynchburg to a 5-0 lead by the end of the frame.
Methodist mounted a brief comeback in the fourth, scoring three runs, highlighted by Rogers' two-RBI double. However, Lynchburg responded immediately with a six-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth. Collins and Pokorak each contributed a pair of RBIs, and a combination of errors and timely hitting allowed the Hornets to extend their lead to 14-3.
Jones added another RBI walk in the sixth, pushing the score to 15-4, which would hold as the final. Pokorak and Jones both finished the game with two RBIs apiece, while Collins had a solid performance, driving in four runs. Munitz and Warren also contributed to the offensive effort, with multiple runs scored.Â
Mason McDowell claimed the win on the mound for Lynchburg.
Trent Judd showed out when he made his appearance, pitching 3.0 innings and throwing seven strikeouts in 13 batters faced.
Conner Moore stepped in for the ninth and effectively closed out the game, throwing three straight strikeouts to seal the victory.
Lynchburg is set to return home for its next outing, getting back into conference action. The Hornets will square off against Eastern Mennonite for a double header on Fox Field on Saturday. March 15, starting at noon.
