No. 3 Hornets Sting Yellow Jackets, 5-3

Lynchburg, Va. -- Three runs in the bottom frames of the seventh and eighth innings allowed the University of Lynchburg baseball team to surge past Randolph-Macon for a 5-3 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Fox Field.

The No. 3 Hornets (18-3, 7-1) struck early in the 1st inning when Sean Pokorak doubled to left field, driving in Brandon Garcia, who scored on an error by the left fielder, giving Lynchburg a one-run edge. Randolph-Macon answered back in the 3rd with a single from Aaron Lautenschlager. A Lynchburg error allowed Lautenschlager to advance to second and Jack Bowles to make it home and knot the score at one apiece.

Randolph-Macon took the advantage in the 4th inning as William Tuttle delivered a two-RBI double to right field, bringing home Jon Quici and Chaz Harvey, putting the Yellow Jackets up 3-1. Lynchburg battled back strong in the bottom of the frame as Gavin Collins singled to the shortstop, driving in Pokorak and cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The Hornets knotted the game at 3-3 in the 7th when Joe Munitz singled to right, plating Logan Webster while Garcia advanced to third. After escaping the top of the 8th, Tyler Howlett had put the nail in the coffin in the bottom of the frame. Howlett nailed one down the right baseline for an electric two-RBI double, scoring Gavin Collins and Pokorak, taking back the advantage for good, 5-3.

Colin McGuire took to the mound in the seventh for Logan Tapman and effectively closed out the game and claiming the victory. Tapman had a solid outing and McGuire came in to seal the deal, allowing just two hits and throwing three strikeouts in 11 batters faced.

The baseball crew is right back into action tomorrow afternoon for a rematch against Greensboro. The Hornets and Pride are set for the midweek clash tomorrow, Wednesday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m. on Fox Field.
