No. 2 Baseball Cruises Past Pfeiffer, VWU On Deck

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball squad, now ranked the second-best team in NCAA Division III by D3baseball.com, secured a solid 13-1 victory over Pfeiffer in seven innings today and look ahead to Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m.

Although the No. 2 Hornets (21-4, 8-2) led all the way through after scoring in the third inning, Lynchburg exploded for four runs in the fourth inning and doubled it in the bottom of the fifth with eight runs to soar by with a win.

Lynchburg got on the board early in the third, with Brandon Garcia driving in Parker Cato on a sacrifice fly to left field for a 1-0 lead. The offense continued to roll in the fourth, as Ryder Warren singled home Benton Jones before Conner Moore doubled to left-center to score Warren. The hit parade didn't stop there: Cato and Maddox Tsutsui added RBIs of their own, pushing the lead to 5-0.

Pfeiffer responded in the fifth, as Javier singled to bring home Merrill, but the Hornets struck back quickly in the second half of the frame. Lynchburg's bats came alive once more, with Jones and Joe Gordon each contributing RBIs. The rally continued with a two-run single by Logan Webster, followed by a two-RBI hit from Cato, and a single from Garcia to extend the lead to an insurmountable 13-1.

On the day, Lynchburg's offense was led by Cato, who finished with three RBIs and three scored runs. Jones collected two RBIs, two runs and one hit while being walked twice. Meanwhile, Warren and Moore each contributed 2 runs and an RBI in the dominant win.

Lucas Marerro got his first career start in his first ever game of his young collegiate career. He walked away with the win and threw 4.1 innings, allowed just two hits and finished with four strikeouts in 16 batters faced.

Next up on the slate is a conference outing at Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins head into tomorrow's affair with a 6-11 overall record and a 2-8 conference record. Prior to sweeping a double header against Ferrum, VWU went on a seven-game skid. The Marlins collectively have a batting average of .273, with Nick Valentin leading the way with an average of .356.
