Newport News, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team stormed in front early and regained the lead with two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to claim its seventh consecutive victory, 11-7, against Christopher Newport on Thursday afternoon at Captains Park.
The No. 2 Hornets (26-4) earned their second win in as many days after taking down Hampden-Sydney yesterday with a seven-inning 15-3 victory. In today's affair, Lynchburg took an early lead that was equalized in the fifth inning, but the Hornets added five runs in the final four innings and held the Captains to just one to secure the win.
In the opening frame, the Hornets stormed ahead by plating six runs, setting the tone early.
Benton Jones started the scoring, crossing the plate on an RBI single by
Ryder Warren.
Bryce Demory followed with a two-RBI strike up the middle, bringing home Warren and
Sean Pokorak.
Maddox Tsutsui continued the first-inning barrage, singling to left and driving in two more runs.
Joe Munitz capped off the rally by wearing a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in the sixth and final run of the frame.
CNU clawed back, with a four-run fifth inning highlighted by a grand slam from Cameron Slough, tying the game at six apiece. Lynchburg responded in the very next frame, reclaiming the lead with a two-RBI single down the right-field line by
Joe Gordon. In the seventh,
Brandon Garcia and
Joe Munitz added RBI singles to extend the lead to 10–6. Munitz struck again in the ninth, knocking in his third RBI of the day to finish off the scoring.
Munitz led Lynchburg with a three hit, three-RBI performance, while three other Hornets posted multi-RBI efforts.
Eric Hiett, Tsutsui and Demory each chipped in two RBIs. On the mound,
Brock Duff took the victory after coming in the sixth inning, throwing for two complete frames. He tallied five strikeouts in just eight batters faced.
Colin McGuire finished the game by stepping in the final two innings and allowed just one hit in six batters faced.
The Hornets are back on the road this weekend, traveling to Danville, Va. to take on Averett on Saturday, April 12 for a double header, starting at noon.
