Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball squad racked up double-digit runs for the 13th time this season en rout to a 14-7 victory against Christopher Newport on Wednesday afternoon at Fox Field.
The No. 4 Hornets (29-5, 14-3) effectively completed the season sweep of the Captains with today's result. Just six days ago, Lynchburg took down CNU on the road with an 11-7 finish. After falling behind by one run in the first on a CNU sacrifice fly, the Hornets answered emphatically in the bottom of the second.
Conner Moore ignited the rally with a solo homer to right, tying the game at one apiece. The inning continued with chaos on the basepaths—
Eric Hiett and
Bryce Demory advanced on a wild pitch while
Logan Webster crossed the plate for a 2-1 lead. Shortly after,
Brandon Garcia delivered a two-RBI single to right center, capping a four-run frame.
Demory excited in the third with a thunderous grand slam to left, plating Webster, Moore, and
Benton Jones to give Lynchburg an 8-1 cushion. He finished the day with three hits on four appearances, six RBI, and two runs scored.
CNU clawed back with a three-run fourth, taking advantage of a couple Lynchburg miscues and trimming the deficit to 8-4. Although the Hornets produced a double play in the fifth, one more Captain crossed the plate to come within three of Lynchburg, 8-5.
Unfazed, the Hornets padded their lead in the sixth when Demory reached on an error that scored
Ryder Warren. Then came a huge seventh inning: Jones drove in a run with a sac fly, Moore crushed a two-RBI double, and Demory knocked in another to extend the margin to 13–5.
Lynchburg added one final insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly by
Joe Munitz. Despite CNU's late push, scoring two more in the eighth, the Hornets' firepower proved too much to overcome. Demory (six RBI), Moore (three RBI), and Garcia (two RBI) led a Lynchburg offense that racked up 14 runs. Moore also went four-for-five at the plate while Garcia hit three-of-five at bats.
The Hornets now prep for a weekend stint against Bridgewater to close out regular season home contests. The double header against the Eagles, which will also serve as the team's senior day, is set to take place on Saturday, April 19, starting at noon.
