Ashland, Va. -- Allowing just one goal across the second and third quarters while scoring 13, the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team swarmed to an assertive 18-6 victory over Randolph-Macon to conclude the regular season on Friday afternoon at Day Field.
The No. 15/12 Hornets (12-5, 9-1) produced a dominant stretch from the end of the first quarter through the entire third period to propel themselves to a dominant 12-goal triumph. From the 56-second mark until the ending seconds of the third quarter, Lynchburg rallied for 14 goals with runs of five and nine straight, allowing a single goal in a 32:13-minute span.
Randolph-Macon got ahead early and took a 3-1 edge with 3:30 to go in the opening period.
Cole Oprandi scored the final goal of the first period with 56 seconds on the clock to kick-start a commanding offensive and defensive showcase for the Hornets. Just six seconds into the second quarter,
Riley Frankel cleanly won at the X and took it straight to the cage for his second goal of the season.
Lynchburg followed with three more goals before Avery Tankersley of RMC got one back for the Yellow Jackets. After that, the Hornets tallied three additional goals before the end of the second period and the squads went into the halftime intermission with Lynchburg in front, 9-4.
The defensive unit shutoff Randolph-Macon out of the break while the offensive group thrived. In just the third period, the Hornets extended their advantage by scoring six unanswered goals and went into the final 15 minutes with a 15-4 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets scored twice, but Lynchburg sandwiched three goals between RMC's two and finished the contest with yet another victory by double-digits.
The Hornets are rolling with momentum right into the postseason. With the regular season coming to an end, the Hornets have secured a spot as the second seed in the ODAC tournament and will kick off tournament play in the semifinal round on Thursday, May 1.
