Hornets Knock Out Mustangs In NCAA Second Round, Advance To Third Round!

Newport News, Va. -- A rush of 10 straight goals in the first half allowed the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team to thrash Stevenson, 15-6, in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.

The Hornets survive and advance to the third round of the NCAA tournament and will take on host Christopher Newport on Sunday, May 11 at 3 p.m. Alumni and students are offered one free ticket for tomorrow's contest. After the Mustangs' Hunter Bryant bagged the first goal of the affair, Lynchburg netted 10 consecutive goals across the first and second quarters, holding Stevenson scoreless for a 22:29 span. At the 11:01-mark in the first quarter, Brodie Mason finished a feed from Finn Schmidt to spark the 10-goal rally. Schmidt later capped the stretch by scoring a dish from Riley Hastings with six minutes to go before the halftime intermission.

Hastings led the squad with a career-best eight points on three goals and five assists. The junior attackman bagged two goals and passed out three assists during the 10-goal run. Stevenson got one more to end scoring in the first half and the squads went into the halftime break with Lynchburg in front, 10-2.

Out of the intermission, Max Racich got one past the Hornets' netminder Andrew Miller. Lynchburg answered as Parker Sealey scored in transition with 7:53 to go in the third quarter. Stevenson notched back-to-back goals afterwards, narrowing its deficit to 11-5 with 6:07 left in the third period, but Lynchburg allowed just one goal the rest of the way while scoring four.

Miller continued his dominant streak in the cage, stopping 20 shots while allowing just six, just one shy of his career-best of 21 saves that occurred against Roanoke in the ODAC semifinal. Along with Hastings' offensive showcase, Liam Holman secured a hat trick while Schmidt tallied four points on one goal and three apples. Riley Frankel was commanding at the X, winning 12 of his 18 faceoff attempts.

The men's lacrosse crew is right back into action on the same field tomorrow afternoon to take on the Captains on Sunday, May 11 at 3 p.m. Earlier this season, CNU edged Lynchburg to claim a 14-12 victory in the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic. The Hornets assuredly will look for revenge in tomorrow's outing.
