Women's Soccer Looks to Remain Undefeated at Maryville (Tenn.)

Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team will attempt to register its fifth consecutive shutout and remain undefeated on Saturday, Sep. 13 at 1:00 p.m. at Maryville (Tenn.) in a nonconference clash.

The Hornets lead the all-time series record, tallying three wins without a loss. Lynchburg clinched the last meeting between the two clubs with a 2-1 victory at the Shellenberger Classic in 2019.

To begin the 2025 season, Lynchburg boasts a 3-0-1 record with four clean sheets. Kate Shepherd opened each match between the pipes, while Kylie Cass played the final 45 minutes of Lynchburg's recent 3-0 win over Meredith last weekend. Shepherd sits fifth in the national standings with three shutouts.

At the Shellenberger Classic, the Hornets' offense sprang to life with five goals and three assists throughout the weekend. While both goals to topple New Jersey City on Friday night arrived in the second half, Lynchburg converted all three tallies versus Meredith in the first 25 minutes.

Four different Hornets have scored a goal; Lauren Orner found the back of the net in both games of the Shellenberger Classic, leading the team with two.

On the other side, Maryville holds an uncharacteristic 1-4 record to begin the regular season. The team has tallied 10 or more wins in every season since 1999, capturing an undefeated conference record in back-to-back seasons.

The Scots defeated Spalding 1-0 for the team's lone victory of the 2025 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 30. To begin September, Maryville has dropped three straight games.

Senior Hannah Smoot netted the Scots' two goals to open the regular season. The Maryville offense continues to search for attackers to replace the services of Sierra Lee, who tallied 17 goals and four assists in 2024.

The Scots defeated Belhaven 1-0 in the 2024 Collegiate Conference of the South Championship, securing their spot in the NCAA Tournament. Maryville lost its first-round matchup to Pacific Lutheran 1-0 to cap the season.

With a shutout against Maryville, Lynchburg would surpass its historic streak of four consecutive shutouts to begin the 1999 season. Dating back to 1987, the Hornets have never opened a season holding their opponents scoreless in five straight games.

The match will be streamed on Team1Sports.
