Maryville, Tenn. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team captured its third consecutive win with a 4-1 victory over Maryville (Tenn.) on the road to remain undefeated in regular-season play.
The Hornets entered Saturday with four shutouts secured to begin the season, and Lynchburg left Maryville having posted its highest goal tally of the season. Lynchburg directed nine of its 11 opportunities on-frame, despite being outshot 12-11 after 90 minutes.
Lauren Orner led the offensive effort with two goals, improving her season total to four. Kate Shepherd posted five saves and allowed Maryville's lone goal in 81 minutes between the pipes, while Kylie Cass entered for the final nine minutes.
In the seventh minute, Morgan Oliver converted a highlight-worthy sequence for the Hornets' first goal of the match. Madelyn Boyce reversed the field, and Oliver weaved through four defenders while entering the attacking third. Footsteps beyond the 18-yard box, Oliver smashed the shot beyond the reach of the keeper to give Lynchburg the lead.
The Hornets created separation in the 26th minute when Lauren Orner connected on a corner kick from Sammie Rogstad. Orner used a header to lift the ball above the fingertips of Maryville's keeper and post her third goal of the season.
Maryville's MC Halliburton cut the lead in half with a 27th-minute strike, and the scoreboard read 2-1 going into the halftime huddle.
In the 74th minute, Lynchburg once again benefited from the corner kick with Lauren Orner collecting her fourth goal of 2025. Reminiscent of the first-half goal, Sammie Rogstad placed the ball in the middle of the box; as players collided, the ball trickled to the grass and Orner cracked the net comfortably.
Freshman Makayla Hargrove added insurance in the 78th minute to seal the victory. Sadie Bruton sent a through ball skipping past the Maryville back line, and one-on-one with the keeper, Hargrove placed the slow rolling shot in the bottom right corner.
26 Hornets touched the field in Saturday afternoon's victory, and Lune DenHartog became the only Lynchburg player to register the full 90 minutes. The Hornets have compiled multiple goals in each of the three contests throughout the winning streak.
Lynchburg improved to 4-0-1 on the season, allowing just one goal in 450 minutes. With the win, the Hornets remained unbeaten against Maryville in their series history, boasting an unblemished 4-0 record.
Lynchburg returns to action in a neutral-site affair on Sunday, Sep. 21 as the team faces fifth-ranked Emory at 1:00 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C.
