Lynchburg, Va. -- The first Code Red competition of the year is set! The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team will take on the Mary Washington Eagles on Shellenberger Field this Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
The Hornets (3-0-2) are prepared for a midweek matchup against their first nationally recognized team in the coach's rankings of the season in the RV Eagles (3-3). With this contest being a Code Red affair, supporters are encouraged to come out wearing their Hornet red colors and enjoy festivities that will compliment the high-level action, including a raffle and halftime games on the field.
Since 2000, Lynchburg and Mary Washington have met on the pitch eight times. The Eagles own a slight edge in the series over the last 25 years as the Hornets are 2-3-3 through that span. The last two outings between these sides have resulted in 2-2 draws. UMW has claimed the most recent victory, asserting a 3-0 win on Sept. 22, 2021. The last time Lynchburg defeated Mary Washington was Sept. 11, 2011, beating the Eagles 2-0 on the home turf.
Through five games, the Hornets remain undefeated, the longest such streak to begin a campaign since 2022 where Lynchburg went 14 straight games without a loss to start the season. Last time out, Lynchburg scored a barrage of goals in a 9-0 triumph that saw the most offensive action in a contest since 2019.
Chris Bovo and
Carlos Andres Romero put on career-best performances, each tallying hat tricks.
UMW has an even .500 winning percentage to start the year and have lost both of their last two outings. After dropping to ODAC foe Hampden-Sydney, 3-0, the Eagles were nipped by Washington College, 3-2. Prior to its two-game skid, Mary Washington edged out then-ranked No. 4 Washington and Lee, 2-1. On the offensive end, Sammy Amorose leads the pack with four goals and three assists, both team highs.Â
Following tomorrow's match, Lynchburg will meet Franklin and Marshall at a neutral site in Harrisonburg, Va. at the Horizons Edge Sports Campus on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m.
