Women's Soccer Home Slate Commences with Shellenberger Classic

Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team returns to Shellenberger Field on Friday, Sep. 5 at 7:00 p.m. as the team prepares to host New Jersey City and Meredith in a pair of weekend matches at the Shellenberger Classic.

The 2025 Shellenberger Classic features four teams: Lynchburg's two opponents and Roanoke, who will not play the Hornets until the conference schedule begins. Dr. Todd Olsen's club has not hosted the Shellenberger Classic since 2019, when the team defeated Maryville (Tenn.) and Kalamazoo in early September.

Following the Hornets' 7:00 p.m. game on Friday, the team will face Meredith at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 6. Both neutral-site matches will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Lynchburg opened the season last weekend at the Roanoke Invitational in Salem, Va., posting two clean sheets and winning the opening match 1-0 against Denison. Makayla Hargrove tallied her first goal as a Hornet, while three freshmen earned their first collegiate start.

New Jersey City began the 2025 campaign with a pair of wins over SUNY-Delhi and Bard College at an event hosted by Bard at the Lorenzo Ferrari Soccer & Lacrosse Complex. The Gothic Knights' 2-0 victory to open the season marks the second consecutive season opener in which New Jersey City won in shutout fashion.

The Gothic Knights ended last season with a 5-0 defeat against Hartford in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. Hartford would advance to win the tournament, while New Jersey City ended its season with a 7-6-8 record.

Meredith's opening contests featured a 0-0 draw against Bob Jones and a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Piedmont. Both matches took place at North Carolina Wesleyan's Scalf Field, and Meredith will have to wait until Wednesday, Sep. 10 to host its home opener versus Guilford. The Avenging Angels will face Roanoke on Friday in day one of the Shellenberger Classic.

Following this weekend's contests, the Hornets only host one additional home match in September as Randolph travels to Lakeside Drive on Wednesday, Sep. 24.

All matches will be live-streamed on FloSports.
