Huntingdon, Pa. -- For the first time in program history, the University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team commanded a four-set victory over Juniata on the road at Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday, giving Juniata its first loss on its home court from a non-ranked opponent since 2019. In the first of back-to-back matches, Lynchburg swept Scranton.
The Hornets (15-4) took down their first ranked opponent of the season in No. 6 Juniata (10-4) right after taking down Scranton (11-8) in straight sets. Lynchburg completed its two-match slate with a 20-25, 27-25, 25-20, 30-28 win over Juniata. After dropping the opening set, the Hornets answered by taking three consecutive frames, including two sets decided by two points.
Phillips paced Lynchburg with 15 kills in the second match. Hardie posted 11 kills, 12 digs and seven service aces, finishing with a team-high 19 points. The graduate's seven aces are the most in a single match for a Hornet since
Jaina Leek's eight aces against Hollins on Oct. 14, 2023. Williamson added eight kills, while Meinhardt contributed six kills, one solo block and three block assists.
Scipione totaled 27 assists and six digs against Juniata, while Phelps supplied 10 assists and seven digs.
Mia Hinkamper led the defensive effort with 29 digs and added two service aces. The Hornets produced their best offensive set of the day in the third frame against Juniata, hitting .345 with 14 kills and four errors on 29 attacks. Lynchburg then recorded 16 kills in the fourth set to finish the match.
Lynchburg totaled 50 kills, 67 digs and 10 service aces against Juniata. The Hornets held the Eagles to a .062 hitting percentage in the fourth set and finished the competition with a 15-4 overall record.
Lynchburg opened the Saturday double header with a 25-20, 25-17, 29-27 victory over Scranton. Lynchburg recorded 42 kills, seven service aces and four solo blocks while holding Scranton to a .085 hitting percentage.
Ava Meinhardt and
Cambre Phillips led the attack with nine kills apiece. Meinhardt hit .389 and added two solo blocks, while Phillips finished with 11 digs and a service ace.
Tori Williamson and
Kate Hardie contributed eight kills each.
Hardie also recorded 11 digs, three aces and a solo block.
Alexis Scipione distributed 21 assists, and
Kenstin Phelps added 14. Lynchburg hit .189 with 15 kills in the second set before closing the sweep with 16 kills in the extended third frame.
The Hornets are set to return home to Turner Gymnasium for a battle against Randolph on Friday, October 16 at 5 p.m.
