No. 6 Hornets Score Late To Draw With No. 8 Generals

Lynchburg, Va. -- Matthew Viscuso scored an equalizer in the 83rd minute as the Lynchburg men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Washington and Lee at Shellenberger Field on Saturday.

Both teams finished with 11 shots, while the No. 6 Hornets (10-1-3, 4-0-2 ODAC) held a 5-3 advantage in attempts on goal against the No. 8 Generals (9-2-2, 3-1-2). Lynchburg generated the first two scoring chances of the match through Jefferson Lopez Coreas. His first attempt went wide in the second minute before another sailed high in the sixth.

Lopez Coreas placed an attempt on target in the 12th minute, and Fischer Daniel followed with another shot on goal less than one minute later. Washington and Lee goalkeeper Miles Furman and the Generals' defense kept both attempts out.

Washington and Lee opened the scoring at the 21:42 mark when Rowan Sellers scored his sixth goal of the season off an assist from Matthew Jenkins. The Generals carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Stefan Kapitanov helped keep Lynchburg within one goal by making saves in the 48th and 52nd minutes. The Hornets continued pressing, with Lopez Coreas forcing saves in the 56th and 79th minutes.

Lynchburg broke through with 7:29 remaining. Viscuso scored his second goal of the season on his only shot of the match, leveling the score at 1-1.
The Hornets earned another corner kick in the 86th minute, but neither team found the deciding goal before time expired.

Lopez Coreas led all players with seven shots and placed three on target. Daniel and Viscuso accounted for Lynchburg's other two shots on goal. Kapitanov played all 90 minutes and made two saves. Lynchburg held 53 percent of the possession and finished with four corner kicks in front of hundreds of spectators celebrating homecoming weekend.

The Hornets will hit the home field once more in the regular season when Roanoke visits Shellenberger Field on Wednesday, October 21 at 7 p.m.
