Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team notched its third consecutive win to round out an undefeated regular-season campaign on Shellenberger Field with a 5-0 victory over Guilford on Wednesday night.
While the Hornets didn't score their first goal until the 45th minute, they posted a dominant 43-2 shot advantage and corralled 14 corner kicks. Lynchburg directed 18 shots on frame and maintained possession for the majority of the match.
Guilford's Madison Motto made four saves and faced 14 shots throughout the first 44 minutes to protect the 0-0 scoreline. Kate Hillegas shredded the halftime script in the final minute of the first half, as miscommunication between Guilford defenders allowed Hillegas to secure possession and score with one touch.
Lynchburg's offense found new life in the second half, as the Hornets outshot the Quakers 28-0. The attack continued in the 50th minute when Leigha Gronau netted her seventh goal of the season on the run, courtesy of a give-and-go assist from Makayla Hargrove.
In the 66th minute, Ally Hopkins extended the lead to three with an ambitious attempt from beyond the 18-yard box. Ava Olson and Teigan Casey found Hopkins charging into the attacking third, and off balance, the freshman lifted her shot above the keeper's reach.
Seconds later, Hillegas found her second goal of the contest. The sophomore transfer lasered her chance past the keeper from the left side, securing the first brace of her Lynchburg career.
To cap the fireworks on offense, Hannah Phillips converged into the box and rolled a low-lying cross to Sejal Wellington for the team's fifth goal. Wellington's 76th-minute goal marked her second in as many games, as the Hornets cruised to a 5-0 victory.
The Hornets' 6-0 home slate marks the first undefeated regular-season campaign on Shellenberger Field since the 2014 team posted a 14-0 mark.
With two regular-season matches to go, Lynchburg (13-2-1) travels to Bridgewater, Va. on Saturday, Oct. 24 to face Bridgewater (11-2-2) at noon.
