Box Score

Game Stats

Lexington, Va. –
The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team fell 2-1 to No. 2 Washington and Lee at Alston Parker Watt Field on Saturday afternoon, marking the Hornets' first loss of conference play.

Despite outshooting the Generals 8-5, W&L tallied 10 corner kicks and scored twice in the first 11 minutes. Both teams directed four shots on target throughout the match.

W&L earned several attacking opportunities in the opening minutes, and Elizabeth Zimmerman converted their first goal in the ninth minute. Against tight defense by Lune DenHartog, Zimmerman received a pass from Shay Bowman near the top of the box and scored off a spin move.

In the 11th minute, the Generals popped the net again. Following a corner kick, the Hornets' clearance failed to leave the box; Alex Van Arsdale sent a low rolling pass towards the goal, and Amelia Manke tucked away W&L's second goal.

Lynchburg's comeback efforts began in the latter portion of the first half, as the Hornets secured three corners in the final 24 minutes. With W&L struggling to create attacking opportunities, Lynchburg capitalized to cut the lead in half in the 39th minute.

Sophomore transfer Kate Hillegas received a pass while rushing into the attacking third, and continuing her run out wide, charged towards the goal for her first goal as a Hornet.

The Hornets dominated the shot category in the second half, outshooting their opponents 5-0 and registering three on-frame.

Lynchburg's most dangerous sequence began in the 66th minute when Kate McEnroe saved Hillegas' shot from beyond the 18-yard box. While the Hornets came up empty, the offense generated a pair of chances in the following minutes.

Mack Cooper tried a light shot in front of goal in the 68th minute that was saved by McEnroe, and 30 seconds later, Ava Olson's chance deflected out of bounds. The scoreline remained at 2-1 for the remainder of the match as the Generals weathered the Hornets' offensive surge.

Lynchburg (9-2-0) returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 7 to host Averett (0-5) on Shellenberger Field for a 4:00 p.m. ODAC clash.
