Lynchburg, Va. – Rylee Wampler slotted home the game-winning goal as the University of Lynchburg women's soccer team posted a 2-1 comeback victory over Roanoke in an ODAC Quarterfinal matchup on Shellenberger Field.
The Hornets dominated offensively with a 13-4 shot advantage and held the Maroons to one shot on target throughout the 90 minutes. Lynchburg earned eight corners to Roanoke's two, while each of the match's three goals occurred within the first 25 minutes.
After the opening minutes of back and forth possession, Rebecca Carr funneled a through ball to Madalyn Szoke for the Maroons' lone goal of the contest in the fifth minute. Saturday's match marked the second time this season that Lynchburg conceded the opening goal and came back to win the game, as they did for a 2-1 victory over Hope during the opening weekend.
10 minutes later, Lynchburg equalized when Ally Hopkins lofted a cross into Lauren Orner in the box. The senior midfielder tucked a header into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season, while Hopkins secured her seventh assist.
The Hornets opened an offensive onslaught, firing four shots in 7 minutes. In the 25th minute, Rylee Wampler found the go-ahead chance when she lofted a shot from beyond the 18-yard box. Roanoke keeper Grace Suchy mishandled the bounce, and the Hornets benefited from the defensive miscue to take the lead.
In the second half, Lynchburg generated consistent possession and held the Maroons to one shot during the final 45 minutes. With five minutes remaining, the Hornets successfully bled out the final ticks and kept possession in their attacking third.
Saturday's win improves the Hornets' home record to 7-0 on Shellenberger Field, while outscoring opponents 33-2.
Lynchburg will advance to the ODAC Semifinals to host No. 14 Batten on Wednesday, Nov. 4. More game details will be released throughout the week.
