Demorest, Ga. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team opened up its season with an emphatic 10-0 victory against George Fox in its first game of the Piedmont Tournament on Friday night at Loudermilk Field.
The Hornets (1-0) earned their first win of the season against the Bruins (0-2) by piling runs in the sixth and eighth frames. Lynchburg scored in three different innings and backed the offense with a strong performance on the mound to secure the shutout.
After a scoreless first inning, the Hornets got on the board in the second. With the bases loaded,
Sean Pokorak drew a walk with the bases loaded to force in
Joe Munitz and give Lynchburg a one-run lead. George Fox threatened at times early with multiple hits through the first five innings, but Lynchburg pitching worked out of trouble and kept the Bruins off the scoreboard.
The Hornets added to their lead in the sixth inning as
Benton Jones walked with the bases loaded to bring home a run, and
Jack Pokorak followed with a single that drove in
Brandon Garcia and
Gabriel Pegues, extending the advantage to 4-0.
Lynchburg broke the game further open in the eighth inning with six runs on four hits. Jones delivered an RBI single,
Kyle Moshier worked a bases-loaded walk,
Jack Pokorak scored on a wild pitch, and
Kyle Flora singled to center to drive in two runs. Flora later scored on an error to cap off the run spree and effectively seal the game.
On the mound,
Tyler Kaltreider earned the win, throwing six shutout innings while allowing seven hits and striking out 10.
Trent Judd followed with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three and closing out the combined shutout. Lynchburg finished with 10 runs on 10 hits and played error-free defense in the season-opening win.
The Hornets continue play in the Piedmont tournament with two games tomorrow, first against Rhodes at 10 a.m., then against host Piedmont at 2 p.m.
