Misenheimer, N.C. -- Sophomore attackman
Will Rubley showed out with a nine-goal performance to tie the program record for most goals in a game as the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team defeated Pfeiffer, 24-7, on Saturday afternoon at Lefko-Mills Field.
The Hornets (2-0) set the tone early, scoring five goals in the opening quarter while holding the Falcons (3-2) scoreless.
Will Rubley opened the scoring and added two more first-half goals, including a man-up strike assisted by
Liam Holman.
Cam Ash,
Matej Roth, and
Spencer Vandenberg also found the back of the net in the first, giving Lynchburg a 5-0 advantage after one.
Lynchburg erupted for nine goals in the second quarter to build a 14-2 halftime lead. Rubley continued his standout performance, finishing with nine goals on nine shots. Holman tallied one goal and two assists, while
Riley Hastings scored twice in the contest. Roth added two goals, and
Riley Frankel,
Mikey Richardson,
Kayden Hinchey,
Adam Volm,
Spencer Vandenberg,
Mark Rubley,
Liam Crawford,
Quincy White, and
Drew Schmidt each contributed a goal.
As a team, Lynchburg outshot Pfeiffer 62-32 and held a 45-30 edge in ground balls. The Hornets were efficient in transition, clearing all 23 of their attempts, and converted both extra-man opportunities (two-for-two). At the faceoff stripe, Lynchburg went 18-for-31, with contributions from multiple players. Frankel won nine-of-11 attempts at the X, while
Rocco Egan went seven-for-10.
Defensively, Lynchburg limited Pfeiffer to seven goals and forced 19 turnovers.
Eric Allen earned the win in goal, making eight saves in 40:37 of action, while
Baden Garwood recorded five saves over the final 19:23.
After building a 20-5 lead through three quarters, Lynchburg closed out the 24-7 victory with four fourth-quarter goals to secure the road win. The Hornets now take their talents to Salisbury, Md. to square off against No. 2/2 Salisbury on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m.
