Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team dropped the final contest of a three-game home series against York, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Fox Field.
The No. 7/2 Hornets (6-2) claimed two of the three outings against the Spartans (1-3), but fell just short in the final matchup. Lynchburg struck first in the third inning.
Gavin Angelillo was hit by a pitch and eventually came around to score on a throwing error by York's third baseman, giving Lynchburg a 1-0 lead. The Spartans answered with two runs in the fourth, taking advantage of a single and a Hornet error to go in front 2-1.
Lynchburg regained the lead in the fifth with a two-run rally. Angelillo doubled to left center to start the inning, and
Kyle Moshier followed with a double to bring him home.
Brandon Garcia then laid down a bunt single that scored Moshier, putting the Hornets ahead 3-2.
York evened the score in the seventh on an RBI single, and after a solo home run by Ethan Hotchkiss in the eighth gave the Spartans a 4-3 edge, Lynchburg responded in the bottom half.
Joe Munitz worked a walk and later scored when
Sean Pokorak doubled to left center to tie the game at 4-4.
In the ninth, York loaded the bases with three singles and pushed across the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Alex Neeld. Lynchburg mounted a final opportunity in the bottom of the inning. Garcia singled up the middle and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by
Benton Jones.
Quinn Madden was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, but the rally ended there.
Lynchburg finished with five hits, including doubles from Angelillo, Moshier and
Sean Pokorak.
Nick Mattfield started and allowed two runs, one earned, over 5.1 innings.
Mason McDowell and
Colin McGuire combined in relief, but York's late run proved to be the difference.
Next up, the Hornets hit the road for the first competition of a home-and-home series against Greensboro on Tuesday, March 3 at 3 p.m.
