Maryville, Tenn. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team traveled to Maryville College and dropped the contest, 8-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Scotland Yard.
The No. 7/4 Hornets (7-3) suffered their first true road loss of the season at the RV Scots (7-4). Lynchburg opened the scoring in the outing right away.
Brandon Garcia doubled down the right field line to start the game, and after
Jack Pokorak singled,
Quinn Madden drove in Garcia with an RBI single to give Lynchburg an early 1-0 lead.
Maryville responded immediately with three runs in the bottom of the first. A sacrifice fly by Colin Dunworth tied the game before back-to-back RBI singles by Frank Derner and Titus Suggs pushed the hosts in front, 3-1. The Scots added two more runs in the second inning on a two-run home run by Masin Hall, extending the lead to 5-1.
Lynchburg trimmed the deficit in the fourth when
Jack Pokorak led off the inning with a solo home run to center field, making it 5-2. Maryville answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 7-2 advantage.
The Hornets threatened again in the seventh.
Conner Moore singled to right field and moved into scoring position before
Kyle Moshier followed with a single to load the bases. Garcia then drew a walk that brought Moore home, cutting the margin to 7-3. Maryville added one more run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI walk to make it 8-3, and the Scots bullpen closed the game out over the final innings.
Lynchburg finished with seven hits in the contest. Pokorak led the offense with three hits, including a home run and an RBI, while Garcia added a double, scored a run, and drove in one. Madden also contributed an RBI single in the opening inning.
On the mound,
Davis Watson took the loss after allowing five runs over two innings.
Austin Riney,
Mason McDowell,
Thomas Mooring,
Justin Davis,
Trever Barnes,
Elijah Laughman, and
Colin McGuire combined in relief as Lynchburg turned to several arms throughout the game.
The Hornets return to the field this weekend, welcoming Washington and Lee to Fox Field for a double header starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7.
