Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team rebounded in a big way on Saturday, defeating Shenandoah 12-2 in seven innings at James C. Fox Field.
The No. 2/2 Lynchburg Hornets (31-4-1, 18-1-1 ODAC) set the tone early against the No. 8/9 Shenandoah Hornets (30-9, 13-7) with a two-run first inning.
Brandon Garcia drew a walk and later scored on a bunt single by
Joe Munitz that resulted in an error, and
Sean Pokorak followed with an RBI single to give Lynchburg a 2-0 lead. The Hornets added another run in the second when
Kyle Moshier walked and eventually scored on an RBI single from
Jack Pokorak.
Lynchburg extended the lead in the third. Munitz singled and moved into scoring position before
Sean Pokorak doubled to left, and a sacrifice fly by
Kyle Flora and a balk helped push the advantage to 5-0.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Hornets broke the game open in the fifth, scoring four runs. Moshier doubled and later scored, Garcia drove in a run with a single, and multiple Shenandoah errors allowed additional runs to cross as Lynchburg built a 9-0 lead.
Shenandoah scored twice in the sixth, but Lynchburg answered immediately.
Gabriel Pegues delivered an RBI single in the sixth, and the Hornets added two more in the seventh as
Jack Pokorak tripled and
Quinn Madden and
Sean Pokorak followed with RBI hits to make it 12-2.
Lynchburg finished with 12 runs on 12 hits while drawing 11 walks.
Sean Pokorak led the offense with three hits and two RBI, while
Jack Pokorak added three hits, including a triple, and drove in a run. Munitz collected two hits and an RBI, and Garcia scored twice and drove in a run.
On the mound,
Nick Mattfield earned the win, allowing one run over 5.1 innings while striking out three.
Colin McGuire followed with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to help secure the victory.
The Hornets have one more regular season contest before heading into the conference postseason. Lynchburg will take on No. 13/13 Christopher Newport at home on Tuesday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m.
