Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team traveled to top-seeded Washington and Lee for the ODAC Championships and was defeated, 18-8, on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals jumped in front of the Hornets early, scoring the game's first four goals before
Spencer Vandenberg got Lynchburg on the board with a goal assisted by
Eric Allen on a down-field heave. Washington and Lee continued its run, building a 7-1 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Lynchburg found some momentum in the second quarter with a three-goal stretch.
Mark Rubley converted on a man-up opportunity off a feed from
Riley Hastings, and
Kayden Hinchey followed with a goal assisted by Hastings.
Liam Holman added another score to cut the deficit to 7-4. However, Washington and Lee answered with three late goals to take a 10-4 lead into halftime.
The Hornets continued to battle in the third quarter. Holman scored on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Hastings, and
Matej Roth later added a goal assisted by
Finn Schmidt. Vandenberg scored his second goal late in the period as Lynchburg trimmed the margin to 14-7 entering the fourth quarter.
Washington and Lee extended its lead in the final period with four straight goals to push the advantage to 18-7. Lynchburg added a late goal from
Adam Volm, assisted by
Quincy White, but could not close the gap in the closing minutes.
Holman and Vandenberg each led Lynchburg with two goals, while Hastings recorded three assists. The Hornets finished with 31 shots and converted two-of-four extra-man opportunities.
Eric Allen made 13 saves in goal, while Lynchburg recorded 26 ground balls in the contest. All-Tournament team members from Lynchburg included
Riley Hastings,
Luke Meadows, and
Kylar Mahoney.
The Hornets now await their fate in the NCAA tournament. The selection show will debut on ncaa.com tonight, Sunday, May 3 at 9 p.m.
