Raleigh, N.C. – Teigan Casey scored a brace in the University of Lynchburg women's soccer team's dominant 4-0 victory over Meredith on Wednesday evening, which marked the Hornets' fifth straight win to begin the season.
The Hornets outshot the Avenging Angels 45-2 and corralled eight corner kicks in the winning effort. With the team's 5-0 undefeated run to open 2026, Lynchburg is one win shy of matching its 6-0 start to the 2017 campaign.
Lynchburg found its first goal in the 25th minute when Ally Hopkins connected with a 20-yard strike. With possession in the box, Makayla Hargrove fed Hopkins outside, who laced the shot above the head of Meredith keeper Delaney Thompson.
11 minutes later, Teigan Casey doubled the lead off a cross from Hannah Phillips. While Meredith's attack traversed over the midfield line, Phillips snuck a tackle from behind and opened the Hornets' transition opportunity. With little defense behind, she directed the low-lying pass to the foot of Casey, who snatched the second goal.
The Hornets carried the 2-0 lead into halftime with 24 first-half shots, the most in a half since Lynchburg's 26 in the first 45 minutes against Ferrum in November 2024.
Casey netted her second goal of the contest in the 65th minute, while Sejal Wellington earned her first assist of the season. Wellington fired a pass to Casey in transition, who split two defenders with a shot in the box.
The two-goal effort marked Casey's first multi-scoring performance as a Hornet.
To close the scoring, Samantha Mitchell dribbled from midfield to the end line before popping the net with an off-balance shot. Mitchell's goal marked the second of her Lynchburg career.
Julia Salo and Kylie Cass each made a save between the pipes to submit Lynchburg's fourth consecutive shutout of the season. Each goalkeeper played 45 minutes, and the duo has now shared reps in goal for the past four games.
Lynchburg scored multiple times in each of its five victories to open the season, a feat last accomplished by the 2014 National Championship team.
Next up, the Hornets will host their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 19 when they take on Marymount at 5:00 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
