Women's Soccer Earns Commanding 4-0 Win Over Maryville

Salem, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team earned its second win in as many days with a commanding 4-0 victory against Maryville College on Saturday evening at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.

The Hornets (2-0) scored twice on the Scotts (1-1-1) in each half. Lily Kuykendall opened the scoring at 37:21 with her first goal of the season, assisted by Hannah Phillips. Sadie Bruton doubled the lead 52 seconds later, recording an unassisted goal at 38:13. Lynchburg carried its two-goal advantage into the halftime intermission.

An own goal at 57:18 created by great attacking pressure off a corner extended the Hornets' lead to three. Laney Richmond completed the scoring at 67:21 with her first goal of the season, assisted by Abby Nadeau.

Lynchburg finished with a 23-2 advantage in total shots and placed 14 attempts on goal. The Hornets recorded 10 shots in the first half and 13 in the second. Maryville did not attempt a shot before halftime and finished with one shot on goal.

Lauren Orner led Lynchburg with six shots, including two on target. Makayla Hargrove took three shots and placed all three on goal. Teigan Casey added three attempts with two on target, while Samantha Mitchell recorded two shots and one attempt on goal.

Morgan Oliver, Kuykendall, Rylee Wampler, Bruton, Richmond and Gianna Brown each registered one shot on goal. Leigha Gronau, Ally Hopkins and Ava Olson also recorded one shot apiece.

Julia Salo played the first 45 minutes in goal for Lynchburg and did not face a shot. Kylie Cass played the second half and made one save as the two goalkeepers combined for the shutout. Maryville's Trinity Atkinson made nine saves in 71:18, while Emma Zegers recorded two saves over the final 18:42.

The Hornets earned seven corner kicks compared with three for the Scots. Lynchburg committed seven fouls, was called offside three times and received no cards. Maryville committed five fouls and was ruled offside four times.

Lynchburg is set to take its talents to Salisbury, Md. next weekend for another pair of matches in back-to-back days. The Hornets will face Salisbury on Saturday, September 12 at 1 p.m., then St. Mary's on Sunday, September 13 at 3 p.m.
