James Goss

Since returning to his alma mater Goss has steadily moved thewomen's team up in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC),regional and national rankings. In the spring of 2008 he guidedJennie Pernisi to a new conference record in the steeplechase andthe conference's rookie of the year honor. In 2007, Mary Mohayearned the ODAC Women's Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award andAshley Meyer earned the same recognition in 2010. He has guided 21ODAC Champions, two Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the ODACRookie of the Year, seven provisional national qualifiers and boththe 2008 and 2010 outdoor track and field teams were namedall-academic. Currently 14 new school records and 68 all-time topfive performances have been established under his leadership since2006.  With the retirement of Dr. Toms from the headmen’s track & field position in 2010 Goss assumed the newrole under Director Doug Thomasey as the Associate Head Track &Field Coach working with both the men’s and women’ssprinters and jumpers.

Before returning to LC, Goss spent five years as an assistanttrack and field coach for Emory University (GA), specializing inthe sprints, hurdles and jumps. At Emory he was recognized 5 timesto the University Athletic Association Coaching Staff of the Yearand coached 20 national qualifiers and 11 athletes to All-Americanstatus.  In addition to coaching he founded the Emory Speed& Strength Camp in 2005 and also worked as the director of theevent. He graduated with his master's degree in sportsadministration from Georgia State University in May 2006.

Goss, a 2001 LC graduate, excelled in his four-year career as aHornet. He was named the 2001 NCAA National Athlete of the Year foroutdoor track in 2001 and earned All-American honors 10 times. Gosswas the national champion in the long jump, was a five-timeSouth/Southeast Regional Athlete of the Year and a six-time OldDominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Athlete of the Year.  Gosslives in Lynchburg with his wife, Mackenzie, and daughter, BrennaElizabeth (2).

The Lynchburg women's team has won seven indoor conferencetitles and eight outdoor crowns in the last 12 years. Nine Hornetshave reached All-American status since 1996.
