Jon Lombardo returned to the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team as an assistant coach in the fall of 2026.
Lombardo previously spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Lynchburg from 2012 to 2019. During his tenure, the Hornets compiled a 105-46 overall record and a 54-10 record in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The program won three ODAC tournament championships, made seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the 2015 national championship game, finishing the season ranked No. 2 nationally.
Serving in multiple roles - including defensive coordinator, co-offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator - Lombardo helped recruit or develop 45 USILA All-Americans, 64 All-ODAC selections, three national position players of the year and one national player of the year. He also helped guide Lynchburg to NCAA quarterfinal appearances in 2013 and 2017. In 2025, Lombardo was inducted into the University of Lynchburg Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the 2015 coaching staff.
From 2020 to 2026, Lombardo served as director of athletics and head men’s lacrosse coach at St. Mary’s Ryken High School. He led the program to 47 victories, the second-highest total by a head coach in school history, and expanded participation from 19 to 60 student-athletes. In 2025, St. Mary’s Ryken reached the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship game, finished the season ranked fifth in the DMV and earned Lombardo WCAC Coach of the Year honors. During his tenure, he developed more than 25 NCAA lacrosse student-athletes, three All-Met performers and 22 All-WCAC selections.
As a student-athlete at Lynchburg, Lombardo started throughout his career (2009-12) and was named captain as a junior. That season, he helped anchor one of the best defenses in the nation and earned several accolades, including second-team All-ODAC and All-State. As a senior in 2012, he earned first-team All-ODAC and All-State honors, along with an honorable mention All-American award.
He scooped up 138 groundballs and caused 67 turnovers in his career, but his best attribute was his leadership; he was awarded the Lynchburg Men’s Lacrosse Leadership Award for those efforts in 2012.
He was selected by the Rochester Rattlers in the 2013 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft. Lombardo was also inducted into the Trinity-Pawling School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023 as a captain of its 2008 New England championship team.
Lombardo earned both a Master of Educational Leadership and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Lynchburg.
