Ferrum Runs Past LC Men 74-46

FERRUM, VA - The Ferrum College men's basketball team used a 21-2 run early in the second half to pull away from Lynchburg College for a 74-46 win in the first game of the 2010-2011 season for both teams.

Ferrum led 35-26 at intermission and 37-31 at the 18-minute mark of the second half. The Panthers put the game out of reach over the next eight minutes with a 21-2 run.

Austin Chillemi (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) scored a team-best 10 points (5-8 from the field) for LC, while Brandan Connor (Chesterfield, VA/Benedictine) and Michael Wims (Standardsville, VA/William Monroe) each shot 3-5 from the floor for seven points. Wims collected a team-high seven rebounds.

Derek Mitchell led Ferrum, the pre-season coaches' favorite to win the USA South Conference title, with 15 points and 16 rebounds. JT Edwards had 14 points and Keith Crump also had 11.  Ferrumheld a 48-30 advantage on the boards and forced 27 Hornet turnovers.

Lynchburg (0-1) will compete Friday and Saturday at the Christopher Newport University Classic.
