Virginia Wesleyan Rallies for 47-46 Victory over LC Women

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Lynchburg College women's basketball team held a late three-point lead but couldn't hold on to pull off the upset Saturday, as Virginia Wesleyan College defeated the Hornets 47-46 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

            The Marlins led 24-18 at intermission and opened the advantage to 13 points at the 15:27 mark of the second half. The LC defense held VWC to just four points over the next eight minutes to pull ahead 40-39 with 7:15 left on the game clock. Senior Courtney Brewer (Culpeper, VA/Highland) nailed a jumper to give LC a 46-43 edge with 3:22 remaining, but jumpers by Shawnee Lewis (1:15 left) and Kerry Johnson (25 seconds remaining) put the Marlins back ahead 47-46. VWC missed a free throw with 10 seconds left, but Lynchburg could not convert two shots for the victory.

            Brewer finished with a team-high 11 points, while Katie Crump (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) snared a game-high 14 rebounds to go with nine points. Caitlin Falls (Moneta, VA/Staunton River) added nine points and five boards for LC and Roslyn Alexander (Chesapeake, VA/Shenendenowa) contributed seven points and five caroms.

            Jocelyn Spencer scored a game-high 12 points for VWC (4-3/2-1 ODAC). Kristina Jameson netted 11 points and Kristen Blalock tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.

            The Hornets handled the Marlins on the glass, out-rebounding their hosts 48-25. VWC forced 29 LC turnovers while only committing 15.

            Lynchburg (0-6/0-3) host North Carolina Wesleyan College next Monday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.
