Campbell powers Lynchburg in win over Hampden-Sydney
LYNCHBURG, VA - Benefitting from clutch shooting from junior Nate Campbell (Cary, NC/Cary), the Lynchburg College men's basketball team defeated Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday 70-65 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
Campbell went 8-17 for 25 points and a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line. He also chipped in two steals and six rebounds.
Lynchburg went up early, going on a 12-2 run to start the game. The Hornets went into halftime with a 33-26 lead, but the Tigers came charging back going up 39-35 at the 15:56 mark of the second half.
With Lynchburg down by one at the 11:21 mark, freshman Andrew Simmons (Chesterfield, VA/Meadowbrook) went to the charity stripe and put LC up 48-47. Lynchburg would never relinquish the lead from that point on.
Hampden-Sydney (8-5, 1-4) narrowed it to a two-point deficit with 2:38 left in the game when sophomore Robby Kaiser (East Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) hit a three-pointer to put LC up 68-63. The Tigers had one chance to tie it up with the seconds waning, but Ben Jessee missed the tying shot, ensuring Lynchburg the 70-65 victory.
Freshman Gary Boone (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) making his first career start had 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Michael Wims (Standardsville, VA/William Monroe) was a key figure in the game, pulling down eight rebounds and notching seven points.
Jessee led Hampden-Sydney with 16 points, while Khobi Williamson chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds.
Lynchburg (6-9, 2-5) travels to Washington & Lee on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.
