Lynchburg drops heartbreaker to Bridgewater
LYNCHBURG, VA – It took a strong performance from Bridgewater College women's basketball player Jordan Burkholder to narrowly avoid being upset by Lynchburg College on Friday night. The Hornets fell to the Eagles 63-59 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
Burkholder scored 23 and added seven steals as she set the Bridgewater College all-time scoring mark. Lynchburg was led by junior forward Caitlin Falls (Moneta, VA/Staunton River) who scored 14, going 7-8 from the field while registering two blocks.
Both teams traded shots in the first half, until Burkholder hit a three with :50 seconds left to put the Eagles up 30-28 at halftime. The Hornets would come out firing in the second half going up by five after a three from freshman guard Roslyn Alexander (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendenowa) at the 17:36 mark. Alexander finished the match with nine points and five rebounds.
Lynchburg never trailed in the second half until Burkholder hit a three at the 3:41 mark to put Bridgewater up 55-54. Despite fouling late and a three-point bucket from senior Courtney Brewer (Culpeper, VA/Highland) with :24 seconds left to pull within three, Bridgewater kept the lead, winning 62-57.
Brewer would finish the game with 11 points, courtesy of three three-pointers. She also led the team in steals with three. Junior Katie Crump (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) had 11 points as well and pulled down nine rebounds while dishing out five assists while fellow junior Carly Greenlief (Centreville, VA/Westfield) had eight points and six rebounds.
Jessica Mullen had 18 points for Bridgewater (14-3/9-3 ODAC).
Lynchburg (3-14/3-9 ODAC) goes on the road on Saturday to face Eastern Mennonite at 4 p.m.
