Hornet Men Run to 81-69 Victory over Ferrum after 23-0 Surge
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team forced 24 turnovers and junior forward Austin Chillemi scored a team-high 21 points as the Lynchburg College men's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with an 81-69 victory over Ferrum College Tuesday evening.
Ferrum led 18-14 at the 12:40 mark, before the Hornets exploded for a 23-0 run over the next seven minutes. Lynchburg took a 42-29 led into intermission and led 60-46 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. A quick 13-2 Hornet run put the game out of reach, although Ferrum cut the advantage to 10 in the closing seconds.
Chillemi hit seven of his 10 shots from the floor and nailed 7-of-8 free throws and added three blocks and two steals. Sophomore Harry West, Jr. scored 14 points and Nate Campbell and Manny Hernandez each added 12 points. Sophomore Xavier Parham filled the stat sheet in his first game as a Hornet, scoring seven points with eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Brandan Connor scored eight points and was one short of the school record with eight steals. Hernandez also grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots.
Lamont King paced Ferrum (0-1) with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds, while Maleek Meyers had 13 points. Daryl Hart had 11 points and Nick English collected six points and eight caroms.
The Hornets hit just 14 percent of their three-point attempts (3-22), but connected on 58 percent of their attempts from inside the arc (28-48).
Lynchburg travels to the Mount Aloysius Tournament this weekend, facing the host school Friday at 8 p.m.
