CNU Defeats Lynchburg College Women 58-40
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Christopher Newport University women's basketball team grabbed 18 offensive rebounds Friday evening and used the extra possessions to post a 58-40 victory at Lynchburg College in non-conference action.
Tight defense by the Captains earned CNU an 11-4 lead after the first eight minutes of play, and the visitors closed out the first half with a 15-5 run to take a 36-17 advantage into intermission.
Lynchburg would rally in the second half, trimming the Captain advantage to eight twice, the second time with 7:19 left (46-38) after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Roslyn Alexander. But the Hornets managed just a pair of free throws by Alexander after that and CNU extended the lead in the closing minutes.
Alexander finished with 12 points, nine in the second half. Senior guard Carly Greenlief tallied 11 points and eight rebounds, hitting 5-of-10 shots from the floor. Sophomore forward Caleigh Patterson snared a game-high nine rebounds and added three steals while freshman guard Katie Reeves had six points and three assists. Freshman Shannon Allan added five points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Tia Perry scored a game-high 23 points for CNU (6-3) and added seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Nicole Mitchell had 11 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks. The Captains forced 27 Hornet turnovers and had 18 more shot attempts and seven more trips to the free-throw stripe than LC.
The Hornets (1-7) travel to Eastern Mennonite University Tuesday, January 3 for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.
