VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team had seventh-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College on the ropes Wednesday evening, but the Marlins rallied for a 60-52 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
Lynchburg opened a 28-15 lead through the first 15 minutes of play, fueled by 14 points from junior Nate Campbell (Cary, NC/Cary). Virginia Wesleyan closed the half with a 10-2 run but LC still held a 30-25 advantage at intermission.
The contest was tight throughout the second half, with the lead changing hands several times. Lynchburg took a 48-47 lead after a pair of free throws from Austin Chillemi (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) with 2:29 on the game clock. VWC's DJ Woodmore scored seven-straight points to give the Marlins a six-point edge and Woodmore sank four free throws in the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.
Campbell finished with a game-high 23 points and snared nine rebounds. He hit 10 of his 22 field goal attempts, but the rest of the team shot just 7-of-32. Chillemi grabbed nine rebounds and added four blocked shots, four points and three assists.
Donald Vaughn posted 12 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks and three steals for Virginia Wesleyan (21-3/12-3 ODAC). Woodmore added 17 points and eight caroms.
Lynchburg (11-13/6-9 ODAC) closes out the regular season Saturday at Randolph College at 2 p.m.
