Hornet Men's Lax Defeats W&L 9-7 in ODAC Semis

LEXINGTON, VA – Junior Franc Cook made 13 saves Saturday night to help the third-seeded Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team defeat #2 Washington & Lee University 9-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinals.

The Hornets scored twice in the first two minutes of play, as Max Voumard and Ben Sauer put home unassisted goals. Jack Switala for W&L answered to make it 2-1 and LC closed out the quarter with a Dylan Hoff goal from Ben Sauer. The Generals' Sam Mott netted an unassisted goal five minutes into the second quarter and Scott Meehan tied the score at the 2:43 mark - assisted by Luke Heinsohn. W&L scored a goal with just five seconds left in the half and went into intermission with a 4-3 lead.

The Hornets scored two early goals in the third quarter as they had done in the first.  Hoff scored on a feed from Voumard at the 12:49 mark and Matt Manzo followed with an unassisted goal less than a minute later to put LC ahead 5-4. Meehan knotted the score at 7:49 with a man advantage and Heinsohn fired a shot into the upper right corner to again give the Generals the lead. Andrew Wilfong scored an unassisted goal with just over a minute left in the quarter and Manzo beat the clock with another goal with 0.2 seconds remaining for another lead change.

Switala scored early in the fourth on an assist by Drew Mancini but Joseph Lisicky found the back of the net at 10:47 as LC re-gained the lead 8-7. Manzo added an insurance goal from Eddie Bilinkas with 4:22 remaining on the game clock. LC managed to keep control of the ball in the final minutes and deny the Generals a chance to comeback.

Manzo finished with a hat trick and Hoff ended with two goals and an assist. Meehan and Switala each found the back of the net twice for the Generals.

Jeff Schwartz won 11 of his 18 face-off opportunities for LC and the Hornets out-shot the Generals 35-28. Ned Lundvall made nine stops for W&L.

Top-seeded Roanoke College hosts #4 Hampden-Sydney College Sunday at 1 p.m. That winner will play the Hornets next weekend in the ODAC Championship game.
