Roanoke Wins ODAC Men's Lacrosse Title with 12-10 win over LC
SALEM, VA – The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team defeated Lynchburg College 12-10 Sunday afternoon in the 2011 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship game for the Maroons second-straight crown.
Max Voumard opened the scoring with an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the action. Matt Manzo followed at 12:33 to give the Hornets a two-goal lead. Richard Lachlan put the Maroons on the board on an assist from Mike Hayden. RC tied the score at the 4:15 mark on a tally from Jeff Keating. Pat Ohrem found the back of the net on a Dylan Hoff assist with 1:21 remaining in the stanza.
With Lynchburg leading 3-2 in the second quarter, Roanoke's Drew Manley tied the game with a goal at the 14:02 mark. Keating added another tally to put the Maroons ahead 4-3 with 9:18 left in the half and Trey Keeley put Roanoke up 5-3 at the 6:20 mark.
Andrew Wilfong answered back at 5:41 with a goal to bring LC within one. Keating scored his third and fourth goals less than five seconds apart to make it a 7-4 lead for the Maroons at the 5:04 point of the second. After Roanoke added another goal to lead 8-4, Ryan Greenhill scored with 48.8 seconds left to pull LC within three.
Roanoke entered halftime with an 8-5 lead but added another goal 90 seconds in to push the lead to 9-5. Hoff scored his first of the game at 12:21 of the third and Derek Sweet scored at the seven-minute mark to make it only a 9-7 lead for Roanoke.
Lachlan answered back at 6:17 to make it 10-7 but Sweet added his second tally from Hoff to pull the Hornets within two. With 56.19 left in the third quarter Kyle Smith put Roanoke up again by three, leading 11-8.
Voumard scored the first goal of the fourth period at 13:34 and Hoff scored again from Ben Sauer two minutes later to bring the score to 11-10. After a turnover in the Hornet end, Lachlan scored from Manley to put the Maroons up 12-10. Lynchburg had the ball in the final minute with a man advantage but couldn't convert.
Roanoke out-shot Lynchburg 50-41 in the game. Charles Pease made 16 saves for Roanoke while Franc Cook made 15 saves for LC. Hoff posted two goals and two assists for Lynchburg and Sweet had two tallies. Jeff Schwartz won 10 of his 13 face-off attempts and scooped six groundballs. Keating found the back of the net four times and Lachlan had three scores.
Roanoke earns the ODAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, beginning this week, while Lynchburg (13-6) hopes for an at-large berth.
Cook, Manzo and Joseph Lisicky were named to the All-Tournament Team.
