Randolph-Macon Defeats LC Women 79-67
LYNCHBURG, VA – Maggie Roy hit six three-pointers to lead the Randolph-Macon College women's basketball team to a 79-67 victory Tuesday night over Lynchburg College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game from Turner Gymnasium.
Lynchburg led 32-27 with under four minutes left in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets closed the stanza with a 16-7 run to head into intermission ahead 43-39.
The Hornets kept the game close in the second half, and trailed 54-51 with 14:41 on the game clock after a three-pointer by senior forward Carly Greenlief. The Hornets comeback efforts were hindered by eight-straight misses from the free-throw line, while R-MC made 78 percent from the charity stripe (14-18) in the second half.
Several Hornets filled up the stat sheet. Freshman Shannon Allan was just one point shy of her career high with a team-high 21 points. She also blocked six shots to rank her fourth in school history for most blocks in a single game and the most since the 2004-05 season. The 6'1" forward also added five rebounds and two steals. Greenlief had her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and also had two rejections. Senior forward Katie Crump tallied nine points and 11 rebounds and senior forward Caitlin Falls had six points and seven caroms. Freshman guard Katie Reeves had five points, five assists and four rebounds and Roslyn Alexander and Shea Kelley each also had five points.
"I thought our girls played very hard and with a lot of heart," said head coach Abby Pyzik. "It was a very competitive game down the stretch and we executed well. Shannon has really stepped into her role in our system, she is a very intelligent player, and had really good timing on defense tonight."
Taylor Wieczorek scored a game-high 23 points and tied Crump for the game-high with 11 rebounds. Roy only needed eight three-point attempts to nail six and ended with 21 points and six assists. Sarah Parsons had 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Molly Brown had 10 rebounds.
The Hornets (4-12/3-8 ODAC) travels to Bridgewater College Friday night at 7 p.m. for another ODAC matchup.
