Lynchburg Women's Basketball Upsets Eastern Mennonite, 75-72
LYNCHBURG, VA – Holding on to a three-point lead, Lynchburg College women's basketball freshman Shannon Allan blocked Alisa Brown's three-point shot with three seconds left in the game to help LC defeat Eastern Mennonite University 75-72 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. Coming into the game, EMU led the ODAC with a 15-1 overall record and an 12-1 mark in conference.
Allan scored a career-high 25 points, grabbed six rebounds, blocked five shots and registered five steals in the victory. Junior Shea Kelley added 12 points and six assists while senior Katie Crump tallied 11 points and seven boards. Senior Carly Greenlief scored nine points, hitting all three of her three-point shots.
In the first half, Lynchburg fell back eight points with 13:15 left after two back-to-back three pointers from EMU. The Hornets tied the game up at 5:42 off a free throw from Allan but the Royals went to the locker room at half up by four, 39-35. LC shot 52% from the floor in the first half (17-33).
LC took a 43-42 lead in the second half at the 17:31 mark off a three-pointer from Crump. Eastern Mennonite battled back to take a five point lead after a jumper from Kala Yoders. After consecutive makes from Kelley, Allan and senior Caitlin Falls, LC took a 53-52 advantage.
Lynchburg extended its lead to six (73-67) after a jumper from Kelley with 2:06 left in the game. EMU's Stephanie Rheinheimer hit a three-pointer at 1:17 and Yoders hit a layup with :16 left to pull the Royals within one. Allan sank two free throws with nine seconds left before she blocked the shot with three seconds remaining to seal the 75-72 win.
For the game Lynchburg shot 54% from the floor and 50% from beyond the arc. EMU shot 49% from the floor and 54% from three-point range. Rheinheimer drilled six three-pointers in the game for a total of 18 points.
Yoder led EMU (15-2/12-2 ODAC) with 25 points and six rebounds. Bianca Ygarza had 18 points as well for the Royals.
Lynchburg (5-13/4-9 ODAC) host Randolph College next Friday night at 7 p.m. in Turner Gym.
